Sanding and patching
NEXT >>
Now we move on to the most laborous part of the project.....sanding! Since Dodge was notorious for bad clear coating, the entire truck had to be completely sanded down due to the severe oxidation. Not only that, but I insisted that it was taken down to bare metal regardless to ensure a good quality job. All of the rivets were ground down and the rusty patches in the rear quarters were cut out. The rivet holes where then welded flush. The holes in the rear door were fiberglassed in. The patched holes were then sanded down and covered with filler for extra protection prior to priming. Since the rear quarters were exposed, the surface rust found behind them was sanded down and a rust inhibitor was applied to protect that area. During this stage, I was trying to decide on what to do with the antenna. Do I keep it where it is or try to locate it elsewhere and shave the fender. I wound up finding a "hidden" power antenna that installs under the dash so the decision was made to shave the new fender clean.
